The Lif8 Protocol

The full examination of a living space, conducted by the Lif8 experts. 112 points across 13 domains, from air to biophilic design. It is the first of the four Lif8 services, and the report is the basis for the other three. You are not required to start there: the feasibility study, the client-side advisory and the equipment each stand on their own, at whatever stage your project has reached.

Living room of a residence, with the readings of the place drawn over it
01

The address

Air quality, distributed water, radon potential, noise exposure, flood risk, neighbourhood canopy, light pollution, climate trajectory. These readings come from public registers, obtained for you. Every figure carried into the report states its source and its date.

02

The building

Year of construction, envelope, joinery, ventilation, services, installed equipment and actual servicing. All of it collected by the questionnaire, space by space.

03

The documents provided

Photographs, plans, invoices, product sheets, servicing certificates and analysis reports. What you provide takes precedence over what is estimated. A joinery invoice or a water analysis will move a conclusion.

04

The reference values

They come from the French public registers — Hub’Eau for drinking water, Géorisques for radon and soil, the Base Adresse Nationale, Copernicus and Open-Meteo for air and climate — and from peer-reviewed literature. The registers of your own commune, not a satellite average. Every value is cited in the report, so that any reading can be checked.

What is at stake, domain by domain

Each domain covers a pathway documented in the scientific literature. Here is what each one puts at stake, and why it is measured.

You breathe about twenty thousand times a day, nearly always in the same place. Whatever that air carries reaches the bloodstream within seconds.

Fine particulate matter is the leading environmental risk factor worldwide. It does not stop at the door. A window onto a busy street, an extractor hood that vents nowhere, a badly drawing stove, and the inside becomes heavier than the outside.

Indoor air also degrades on its own. A closed bedroom sees its carbon dioxide climb within hours. Sleep gets lighter, mornings get foggy, and nobody makes the connection.

Light is not only for seeing. It sets the internal clock, and that clock decides when sleep comes, when appetite rises, and how sharp the day feels.

A few lux are enough to slow melatonin. A street lamp through a blind, a television standby light, a backlit clock. The body reads all of it as leftover daylight.

Conversely, a room that gets no strong light in the morning lets the clock drift. The bill arrives in the evening, at the point of falling asleep.

Mains water is monitored. What comes out of your tap is not. Between the two sit the building’s pipes, and they add their own contribution.

Lead has no safe threshold. It no longer comes from the public network, but it can still come from the building’s service connection or a brass fitting.

Chlorine is useful in the pipe, less so in the bathroom. Trihalomethanes are inhaled in the shower, and that is where exposure peaks.

People get used to noise. The body does not. It keeps reacting every night, without the mind ever waking.

Night-time noise triggers a brief alert response, repeated, which fragments deep sleep without leaving the slightest memory of it. It is the repetition, not the peak, that weighs on recovery.

Noise in a home does not come from the street alone. A ventilation unit, a pump, a lift, the reverberation of a hard room. Each is treated differently, and you need to know which one dominates before acting.

Deep sleep begins with a fall in body temperature. A bedroom that is too warm prevents it, night after night.

To fall asleep, the body sheds heat through the hands and the feet. If the room does not absorb it, sleep onset lengthens and deep sleep shortens by as much.

Discomfort does not always come from the air. A cold wall in winter radiates cold while the thermostat shows the right figure. You heat more, you stay uncomfortable, and damp settles in the corners.

A home emits what it is made of, continuously, for years. The walls, the furniture, the floors, right down to the bottom of the pan.

Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer. It comes from the ground, accumulates in the building, and depends first of all on the geology of the address.

Formaldehyde from particle board is a confirmed carcinogen. It is emitted continuously, and a wardrobe full of raw panels is a source, not a detail.

This subject attracts excess in both directions. We treat it like the others. What can be measured, what can be reduced at no cost, and what remains debated.

Eight hours a night in the same place, head a few centimetres from a power strip, is a long exposure at the most sensitive point. That is the one thing that really counts.

Radiofrequencies are classified in category 2B, meaning debated. We say so plainly, making it neither a non-issue nor an alarm.

A home also produces a mental load. It comes from clutter, from screens, from the neighbourhood, and from having nowhere to sit and do nothing.

Visual clutter is associated with cognitive load and raised cortisol. It is not a question of taste, it is a question of how many objects sit in the field of view.

A room that does everything conditions nothing. Sleeping, working and eating in one place blurs the cues the brain uses to switch state.

Between too dry and too damp the margin is narrow. Outside it, viruses, dust mites and mould take the advantage.

Air that is too dry dries out the mucous membranes and lets through what they normally stop. Air that is too damp feeds the dust mites in the bedding and the mould in cold corners.

Mould is not treated where it shows. It appears at the coldest point of the room, and for as long as that point stays cold it returns in the same season.

A good rule applied one evening in three produces nothing. Automation is not a comfort. It is what makes a correction last.

The deep sleep window needs a low night-time setpoint. Almost nobody holds that by hand every evening of the year.

Fixed-rate ventilation is either insufficient when the room is occupied or needlessly noisy when it is not. Continuous measurement settles that.

A place is not only for sleeping. It has to let the body come down. Heat, cold, light, pressure, breath.

Recovery is not comfort. It is the moment when the nervous system leaves alert mode, when heart rate comes down and tissue repair happens. A place can favour it, or prevent it all year round.

These practices do not all rest on the same strength of evidence, and we say so. What the literature establishes, what remains plausible, and what is habit.

Cardiorespiratory fitness is one of the most powerful predictors of longevity we know of. The space still has to let you use it.

VO₂max is among the best predictors of all-cause mortality. One cardio machine that actually gets used counts for more than a whole badly designed room.

Resistance training at least twice a week is associated with lower mortality. It needs little equipment and a lot of floor.

Seeing living things from where you live is not an amenity. It is a factor in recovery, and it can be measured.

Ulrich’s work showed that a view of nature speeds recovery. The effect is measured, not assumed.

Planting, natural light, material and views carry the same effect. They bring attentional load down. What counts is what can be seen from the places where people sit and sleep.

What The Lif8 Protocol comprises

When the report is delivered, a Lif8 expert walks you through it section by section. They explain what was recorded, why one action comes before another, and answer your questions.

Air quality, distributed water, radon potential, noise exposure, flood risk, neighbourhood canopy, light pollution. Querying the public registers is handled in full.

Conducted by a Lif8 expert. Plans, invoices, product sheets, official statements, servicing certificates and analysis reports. Every item uploaded is worked through.

Accompanied by their coverage and reliability indicators, presented at the same rank, in order to establish the robustness of the reading.

Without dilution in an average. Items calling for priority treatment appear first.

Rationale, implementation, expected effect and budget range. Applicable without a contractor and without building work.

Rather than by cost. Each carries the score gain it produces and the next step to be undertaken.

Current month, quarter, year and long term, each with its budget.

The exact scope, the clarifications still required, the photographs examined, and every answer exactly as recorded.

Where our thresholds come from

None is set by us. Each comes from a reference body or from published work, and the report says which, point by point.

01

International guideline values

Air quality, noise, water. The comparison values are those of public reference bodies, published and citable, never a Lif8 house rule.

02

Peer-reviewed literature

Every domain rests on published work. Where a result is still debated, the report says so rather than deciding on your behalf.

03

Public registers

Air, distributed water, radon potential, noise, flood risk, canopy, light pollution. Official data, dated, with the source stated.

04

What is not yet established

Some practices are better documented than others. We distinguish what is established, what is plausible, and what is habit.

The most frequently asked questions

No. The Lif8 Protocol is conducted entirely remotely. Part of the points are read from the address of the property, the remainder come from your answers, your photographs and the documents uploaded. A visit takes place only in the case of a feasibility study with an on-site survey.

You complete the questionnaire at your own pace. Progress is saved, and you may stop and resume as often as needed. The report is delivered within forty-eight hours of the file being complete.

The price covers one property, whatever its number of rooms. Readings, analysis, report and annexes. A second property gives rise to a second Protocol. Beyond a few properties, a bespoke proposal is issued.

We resell no equipment. The report names precise references, which you order from the brand or its distributor. Should you prefer to entrust us with the search, we run the selection, we negotiate the terms and we follow the order through to delivery. Fitting is carried out by the supplier or by a qualified installer of your choosing.

Electronically, and with a meeting. A Lif8 expert walks you through the document section by section, explains what was recorded and why one action comes before another, and answers your questions. That meeting is part of the service, whatever the place measured.

Yes. Public readings cover Europe, North America and much of the world. We work internationally, and the report is delivered in French or in English, as preferred.

From the survey to the works

What the report establishes, the study makes feasible, the works deliver and the equipment completes. None of these stages binds you, and you keep the same experts if you engage them.

You only have to answer

You describe the place room by room and upload your documents. Our experts do the rest, and the report reaches you within forty-eight hours once the file is complete.
